Season 3 episode 2 notes

  • Lloyd has a strange dream about Master Fei, in which she tells him to remember that fire is hot and water is cold. She also says they will meet for real soon.
  • Lloyd wakes up and starts making pancakes. He meets Ryu, who has found a new home for Wolfie. Ryu then falls asleep at the table. He’s been up all night.
  • Cecil goes out to the clubroom to eat pancakes. The two meet Nina who wants to talk to Cecil later.
  • Gabriel wanders into the recently opened club room and explains that since the club is now taking applications, he has already applied himself and he directed André to take care of the other new applicants. Disaster will surely ensue, so Luke runs to find André and help with the applicants.
  • Lloyd heads up to meet with Mashiro and Cecil heads out to hang out on Mr. Fried’s newly polished roof, but they are both interrupted by a strange contraption that flies over the school and crashes into the Eriksson’s little house/smithy. Both of them rush over there.
  • The strange contraption opens and a small Rus woman climbs out. She explains that her name is Evghenia Rachmanova, and that she’s the pilot of this experimental rocketship. It was supposed to be able to go all the way to Britannia, but it apparently didn’t. It was built by the Engineering Club, so Cecil and Mr. Eriksson go there to get an apology out of them for breaking the house.
  • Cecil learns that Evghenia is Mikhail’s cousin.
  • The Engineering Club is led by a callous, scarred woman named Clara Weimar. Clara believes the probability of war to be about 87% and so she’s preparing the club for the war effort. They will contribute to the Teutonian KPD (Kills Per Day). She says the rocketships, when finished, will be able to deliver elite soldiers straight into Londinium. Cecil doesn’t like her. Eriksson is furious with her dangerous experiments, but she says he can’t touch her or he’ll be kicked out of school.
  • Lloyd goes to speak with Mashiro to reassure her she’ll be okay. He discovers that a lot of first years are in the infirmary because the Dueling Club has beaten them up very badly as part of the club tryouts. Only Reginald has adhered to the Codo Duello.
  • Mashiro says that she believes in Lloyd but reminds him that he carries a heavy burden. Lloyd, disheartened at all the responsibility he has, goes to speak with Sister Barbara in the chapel, about how he is worried he might put his friends in danger. They have a heartfelt conversation with many parallels to the adventures of StormJesus, and then Barbara leaves Lloyd alone so he can pray.
  • Cecil goes with Eriksson back to the smithy. Eriksson can easily repair the damage to the wall, but many of the weapons they were making and repairing have been damaged. Alfreda asks Cecil to summon Lloyd, so that he can help out with all the extra work they have now.
  • Cecil is called down to the laundry room by Luke, to help out with the new applicants. André has proclaimed himself the Sultan of Laundry and is forcing the applicants to go through a number of bizarre trials, but he still ends up more popular than the Dueling Club because at least nobody has to get beaten up to join the Military History Club.
  • Viktor, wanting to become the Ultimate Swordfighter, has asked André where he can find Lloyd, and was redirected to a restaurant by André for fun. Cecil makes sure Viktor finds Lloyd, talks a little to Minami (who is also in line to join the Club), and helps Luke straighten out the application forms.
  • Cecil begins aimlessly wandering through the corridors of Eisenkrone over by the newly polished roof, to explore. He discovers that the whole wing is almost abandoned, and just full of old things in storage. A Britannian-style music room, abandoned since before the war, is full of mysterious ice sculptures. A girl named Charlotte has made them because she is homesick. She and Cecil spend some time bonding over cleaning up after she loses concentration and the ice statues collapse.
  • Cecil bumps into Günther, who is confused about why his storm powers aren’t working. Even without them, though, he managed to defeat Reginald (by cheating) and got accepted into the Dueling Club.
  • Lloyd meets Reginald on his way to the smithy. He needs his sword repaired, as Günther broke it by cheating, and he likes Alfreda much better than the official dueling club smith. Lloyd tries to persuade Reginald to leave the Dueling Club, but Reginald says he badly needs a prestigious club membership to please his parents, who aren’t satisfied with his artistic interests. They want him to become an army officer.
  • Lloyd quickly and easily repairs Reginald’s sword and gets to work with the other orders. Viktor comes by the smithy and declares himself Lloyd’s Number One Fan. He sits down and diligently watches him work, being so loud he disrupts Alfreda. After being told to be quiet, he begins to communicate entirely in calligraphy. Eventually, Lloyd sends Viktor away to get a tour of the club locales.
  • Cecil takes Viktor and Minami of a tour of the club locales. As he does so, he discovers his mind is being probed. He asks Minami and she shyly declares that she has trouble controlling her mindbending powers. But then he discovers Minami and Viktor are apparently having a mental conversation, something that implies more control than she lets on. He tries to scan her mind to determine her strength, but fails.
  • Viktor hints at wanting a test of his swordfighting abilities, so Cecil tells Ryoko to try to sneak up on him. Viktor easily defends himself with his wooden sword, proving that he is a quite competent fighter.
  • Lloyd gets a note from Naimitsu, telling to meet her at night.
  • The entire club convenes in the meeting room to handle the first batch of applicants. They are: Gabriel, Haruhi, Minami, Viktor, and Jacob Honecker. Long discussions ensue. Luke is eventually persuaded to let Gabriel join, even though neither Luke, Cecil nor Rei trusts him fully. Haruhi is voted through as well, though some are a bit skeptical because of her young age. Everyone is annoyed by Viktor but agrees that he could use the training so they let him join as well – only Rei objects, as she feels uneasy about him for some reason. Lloyd strongly pushes for letting Jacob join, as he needs friends and is very lonely. Finally, the matter of Minami causes a debate, since a mindbender with uncontrollable powers might accidentally learn the many secrets of the club members. Lloyd and Cecil eventually push the vote in her favor, but not before some very hurtful things about mindbenders have been said, offending both Cecil and Rei.
  • Nina explains to Cecil that she thinks she, Cecil, and some other competent people should keep an eye on the Dueling Club, in case they get up to any more violence. She says not to tell Lloyd as he has enough to worry about already.
  • Cecil goes to bed, having a conversation with Kage about Minami and about how her powers must be reined in somehow, and how she might be hiding secrets of her own. She’s probably more powerful than she lets on… Kage also mentions that he’s been enjoying dating Amanda.
  • Lloyd dons his Oni suit and heads out to train. He meets the Red Oni, and they talk about their worries for the Dueling Club, before they jointly repair the Eriksson’s house to practice their Earthbending.
  • Lloyd meets Naimitsu for a round of special training. Underwater gymnastics are supposed to help him control his fire-powers, by offering a safe space in a cooling water bath. It goes well until Lloyd dives down deep into the lake; he sees a vision of the dragon, panics, and overheats. The lake explodes and turns into very hot rain. Naimitsu approaches Lloyd and tries to calm him down, and Lloyd opens up and admits how scared he is of handling all this responsibility and how he doesn’t feel ready for being a leader. Everyone seems to expect him to take charge of the Military History Club. Naimitsu comforts him until he’s finally calmed down enough that he’s no longer dangerously hot. Lloyd thanks her for listening, and heads back home to go to bed…
