Season 3 episode 12 notes

  • Lloyd, Cecil, Ryoko, Akane, Viktor, Minami, Haruhi, and Anita have gone to Ritterburg to see the mysterious Nipponese singer Mai Mokoto perform at the Rose and Dagger. They are overseen by Naimitsu, in her role as Akane’s bodyguard. Naimitsu watches from the shadows.
  • As the performance starts, the audience is immediately lulled into a trance. Only Lloyd, Cecil, Naimitsu, Akane, and Viktor seem to be able to resist the strange hypnotic power. Viktor does it by thinking extremely loudly, bothering Cecil as he telepathically scans the crowd.
  • Cecil shuts out Viktor to get rid of the distraction, but discovers that it’s slightly difficult. Just as he does, something subtly changes in Viktor’s mind, but Cecil fails to catch it.
  • Cecil makes telepathic contact with Lloyd and Naimitsu, asking if they know what’s going on. He also whispers some to Akane and Viktor, but Viktor is weirdly nonresponsive. As the group discusses via telepathy and quiet whispers, Cecil learns that Mai is most likely a Storm Geisha, with a mindbending ability to dull peoples’ minds and entrance them. Often they work together with a ninja, who uses the distraction to strike.
  • Cecil telepathically contacts Mai. She assures him that the power is just part of the performance, and that nobody will come to any harm. Cecil gets suspicious, and scans the crowd, looking for anything out of place. As he does, he discovers that his own mind has been breached while he was distracted investigating Mai. Someone has tried to read his memories, finding out details about his parents…
  • The performance ends. Everyone applauds, except a very suspicious Cecil.
  • After the performance, Akane mentions to Lloyd and Cecil that she would like some help moving her things into the Military History Club, this evening. They both agree to help.
  • Murdo the barkeep serves up an order of cupcakes and chocolate milk, on Lloyd’s special order. Everyone enjoys a snack, before heading back to the school.

  • On the way back, Cecil starts talking to Minami. They idly chat about private tutoring. Minami says that she’s looking forward to being taught by Cecil.
  • Cecil carefully inquires about Mai’s performance, and then telepathically begins to scan Minami’s thoughts to detect if anything is out of order. He turns the subject to Nipponese clans and Nipponese history. Minami mentions that there are Storm Geishas in her clan, or at least there were in the past.
  • Cecil decides to delve deeper into Minami’s mind, following the surface thought into the private depths of her mind to unearth her secrets.
  • Cecil manages to identify the name of Minami’s clan: Akiyama. He furthermore learns that her mission at Eisenkrone, is to learn the true whereabouts of the Empress!
  • Cecil immediately contacts Naimitsu for a private conversation, revealing that he’s discovered a threat to the Empress and that Akane’s secret identity might be compromised. He promises to tell her more at a later time.
  • Naimitsu moves ahead to hide any of Akane’s possessions that might give her away, now that there’s a spy about. Once that is done, Cecil, Lloyd, and the rest of the club help Akane move into the club dormitories.
  • After an exhausting evening of hard work, Ryu serves everyone a late supper based on his mother’s secret recipe. His chef training continues.
  • Lloyd retires to his room to study for the lesson on Incaland this Monday.
  • Cecil heads back to speak with Naimitsu, revealing Minami’s true mission. Naimitsu says that, given the circumstances, she must take Minami in for questioning – tonight at midnight. Because Minami is a mindbender, she wants Cecil’s help. Cecil knows her well, being her private tutor. Cecil agrees to help interrogate Minami.
  • Cecil finds that Wilhelmina has ironed all his clothes, and given him a proper wardrobe. Cecil is puzzled at how weird it is to have a personal maid.
  • At midnight, Cecil heads down to Lloyd’s room. He asks Lloyd to prepare a disguise, so that he can move about the school incognito at night. Lloyd obliges, creating an Owlman costume out of the props he has for the Incaland lesson.
  • Ceci- er, Owlman, leaves Lloyd’s room inconspicuously and meets up with Naimitsu.
  • Naimitsu says that, since Cecil knows Wilhelmina, he should be good cop. Naimitsu will take the role of bad cop. She’s in her role as brutal ninja bodyguard now, not the motherly mentor she’s been before.
  • Cecil finds Minami tied to a chair, wearing only her nightgown and a blindfold. She’s been kidnapped from bed and painfully tied up.
  • Naimitsu begins interrogating Minami, pushing her, shouting at her and almost making her cry. Minami, in desperation, reaches out with her telepathy powers – and immediately recognizes Cecil by reading his mental signature. She cries out for help.
  • Cecil explains that he can only help her if she answers the questions. Minami refuses. Cecil reveals that he read her mind earlier, and that he knows she’s an Akiyama.
  • Horrified, Minami admits that she is a mindbending spy, sent by Clan Akiyama to Eisenkrone. Cecil accuses her of reading his mind twice before, so she can’t really accuse him of being immoral. Minami protests. She only read his mind once, half by accident, during their training a few days ago. But she only did it to protect the Empress!
  • Minami turns to Naimitsu. She accuses Cecil of being a spy, sent by Clan Kushieda. The Kushiedas are involved in a plot to assassinate or kidnap the Empress, and Minami was sent here to stop it.
  • Cecil scoffs at the suggestion. He and his brother are the last of Clan Kushieda.
  • Hearing him admit his heritage, Minami redoubles her efforts. She explains to Naimitsu that the Kushieda are still alive, and now serve the arch-enemies of Clan Akiyama, the Akatsuki ninja. The Akatsuki seek to destabilize Nipponia by dealing with the Empress. She pleads with Naimitsu to believe her.
  • Shocked at learning that his family is still alive, Cecil contacts his brother. Kage is amazed to learn that he has a family. He urges Cecil to break into Minami’s mind and extract all the information he can.
  • Cecil decides that they must learn if Minami speaks the truth. He breaks into Minami’s mind to take the information he needs.
  • Minami protests, if this evil Kushieda spy learns where her family is, they will all die. But there is no choice; Cecil begins to break down her barriers, extracting all of her secrets.
  • A desperate Minami activates her last-ditch defense. Using a Nipponese mind-altering technique, she burns down her Mindscape, effectively committing mental seppuku.
  • Cecil orders Kage to stop her. With his mind control powers, Kage intervenes… saving only the information he needs to find his and Cecil’s family. The rest of Minami’s memories are destroyed, leaving an unconscious husk. Kage’s intervention saved her from total brain death, but she might never regain her memories or her identity. Only Professor Anderson could save her now, but he’s away in the Capital…
  • Distraught, Cecil learns that Minami was telling the truth. Her few remaining memories indicate that she was indeed sent by Clan Akiyama to protect the Empress from an assassin – and this assassin is, at least as far as Minami knows, a member of Clan Kushieda.
  • Naimitsu is gravely disconcerted to learn that Akane is indeed being hunted by ninja belonging to the most dangerous mindbender clan in Nipponia. Fortunately, Minami’s memories only indicate one or possibly two agents. Perhaps Clan Kushieda isn’t entirely certain of Akane’s whereabouts, or they might have sent more.
  • Kage rejoices, knowing that he has a family. He also seems to regret not saving Minami’s memories of her own family, but it’s too late now.
  • Cecil takes Minami to the infirmary. He wakes up Professor Ryder, who is so surprised he nearly shoots the Owlman-disguised Cecil on the spot, mistaking him for an apache.
  • Professor Ryder concludes that this kind of mental damage exceeds his abilities. The best he can do is keep Minami warm and fed until Professor Anderson returns. Without professional psychosurgery, she will remain in a vegetative state indefinitely.
  • Cecil goes to bed, grieving. Before he falls asleep, he writes a letter to Professor Anderson.

  • As the weekend comes to an end, it’s time for Monday Morning Storm Lore class. Everyone shows up wearing the Incaland outfits they need for the traditional Storm dance. Jacob has a bear-totem outfit, Sanchez has a dramatic poncho, Cecil has a formally correct but quite boring outfit, and Günther is in a “sexy Inca” Halloween costume. Lloyd and Alice show up in the most proper, prude Incaland outfits they can, dressed as witch doctors in full-covering garments with extra bangles and masks, so as not to be indecent.
  • Professor Wolf explains that the anti-Storm dance is done before a Storm comes. It serves to strengthen the bonds between Storm Knights, ensuring protection against the corrupting influences of the Storm.
  • First one must read the signs of nature to see that a Storm is on the way; birds flying irregularly, oddly shaped clouds, or rain with a weird smell are some of the signs.
  • Knowing that a Storm is on the way, it’s important for everyone who participates in the dance to have brotherhood and not enmity. Any grudges or bad feelings must be dealt with, or the dance might be corrupted. Professor Wolf gives the students some time to talk it out with their friends, in case anyone wants to vent.
  • Lloyd talks some with Günther, clearing the air.
  • Lloyd addresses Cecil, and is surprised when Cecil confesses what he’s done. He does not mention that it’s Minami specifically, but he says he put someone in a coma by accident, trying to protect Akane. Lloyd reprimands but comforts him, reminding him that as long as there is hope, he must never give up. Cecil must fight to restore Minami to health, if he can. He is responsible for this. Cecil agrees.
  • Lloyd, having read about mystic Incaland techniques, swears a bond of brotherhood to Cecil.
  • Everyone performs the Storm Dance, with Witch Doctor Lloyd as the leader of the dance. A feeling of unity descends upon the class, and everyone feels bolstered to deal with Storms and other trouble.
  • Class ends late, so everyone heads to History class still wearing their dance costumes. Just as they are about to begin, Professor Schröder receives a sudden letter. He reads it with great anticipation.
  • Professor Schröder tells the class to wait behind after the lesson is over. He has an announcement to make…
