Season 3 episode 8 notes

  • Lloyd, Naimitsu, Akane and Cecil head back to the school. Akane leaves for her own room, whilst Lloyd persuades Naimitsu to not sleep in the cold, drafty attic. Because of her cold, she consents to borrow a room in the old club house.
  • Ryu is up in the club house working out, learning to fight for real.
  • Naimitsu and Cecil say goodnight to Lloyd. They borrow some sheets from Andrés laundry collection and make a bed for Naimitsu in Luke’s old room. Naimitsu keeps Lloyd’s cloak to keep warm.
  • Lloyd dreams of the elements. Cecil has mysterious dreams about a heated argument in Nipponia, which is interrupted by Lloyd for some reason. Just as Lloyd looks into Cecil’s eyes and is about to say something very important, Cecil’s alarm clock rings, and he wakes up.
  • The viewers are introduced to Cecil and Lloyd’s alarm clocks for the first time, gifts from Monsieur Dirac. Lloyd’s plays La Marsellaise, while Cecil’s is a mechanical monkey with cymbals, explaining his irrational newfound hatred of monkeys.
  • Cecil and Lloyd head out to the clubroom to find that Ryu has made breakfast. It’s traditional sumo breakfast consisting of lots of rice and meat. Ryu says that he has decided to help the club grow big and strong using his mother’s secret techniques – she is a fabled onnazumo.
  • Cecil heads down to Ritterburg for Weapon Mastery training with Hildegard, while Lloyd heads out to have a private Weapon Mastery session with Professor Gottlieb.
  • Lloyd overhears Schröder and Gottlieb talking. Schröder is planning to arrange something, and is bringing Gottlieb along. Apparently he’s looking for more candidates for the project.
  • Gottlieb says Lloyd isn’t ready to fight with real weapons yet – he is too uncertain and wishy-washy. It’s important to know exactly what you’re doing and to firmly make up your mind. To this end, he shows Lloyd a bunch of weapons and asks him to mentally visualize attacks with them, so that he will know for sure how the attack would go. He isn’t allowed to swing any weapons yet.
  • Cecil discovers that it’s market day in Ritterburg.
  • Cecil bumps into Reynard Feist, Reginald’s father, outside the guard station. He is here to meet his son’s fiancée, Clara. Since he works as a lawyer, he decided to take on the case of the mysterious horse-stealing Blue Oni that recently attacked Bartolomeus Kreutz, and he informs Hildegard that she had best find and lock up this culprit, and soon.
  • Hildegard worries about catching such a mysterious foe.
  • Hildegard and Cecil head for the roof. Cecil’s armor has been delivered, so Hildegard helps him put it on, and they practice bull rushing each other. Since it’s market day, there’s a big audience.
  • While they train, Cecil conducts his interview with Hildegard about a Storm Beast she’s fought. To save time, Hildegard consents to doing the interview telepathically.
  • Cecil sees a piece of Hildegard’s past, when she was a raw recruit at Castle Elsinore in Daneland. She was shunned for being a half-Scandian bastard to the Kreutz family; Hanna Hoffmeister was her first friend in the army. Since Hildegard didn’t dare ask anyone for help with her armor, she put it on poorly and was nearly killed by a Kraken, saved only by Dietrich Hoffmeister who killed the foul beast with his two-handed sword. Cecil learns about the importance of donning armor properly, as well as details about Hildegard’s past and relation to Commander Hoffmeister.
  • Cecil thanks Hildegard for the training session and walks together with her back to the school, to ask any witnesses about the Blue Oni. She intends to start with Akane.
  • Lloyd, meanwhile, interviews Professor Gottlieb about his Storm Beast memory. He tells a horrifying story of a metal skeleton, specialized at killing mindbenders, that he fought on the Rus steppes. A young boy surnamed Honecker helped his squad locate the monster, but not before most of Honecker’s family had been killed by the monster’s horrifying head-exploding scream. Gottlieb’s friend Schrayber lost a hand to the monster when he silenced it by ramming a fist down its throat, allowing Gottlieb to smash it with a hammer.
  • Lloyd cleans up a bit in the Weapons Mastery arena after Gottlieb retreats, harrowed by retelling such a horrific memory.
  • Lloyd meets Cecil and Hildegard, and learns that Hildegard is investigating the Blue Oni.
  • Cecil and Lloyd together go to Storm Lore class.
  • Professor Anderson reveals to the whole class that the Kaiser is dead, and there’s a school-wide moment of silence. Anderson then explains that, in light of these events, he must travel to the Capitol and tend to some administrative matters immediately after this class. Normally the Principal takes care of this, but Principal von Krakow can’t go for health reasons. A substitute teacher will take Anderson’s place in Storm Lore, while the Mindbending classes will be student-led for now.
  • Everyone in the class re-tells their interviews about Storm Beast battles, while Anderson takes notes on the blackboard. Jacob reveals that he interviewed his uncle Ivan, who turns out to be the very same young boy that helped Gottlieb. Ivan said that seeing his mindbender family killed by the monster taught him that mental powers are weak and inferior. This is why he’s so obsessed with physical strength. He also seems to think Jacob’s psychic blast power is a hereditary mutation caused by the Storm Beast, since it’s very similar to the beast’s head exploding ability.
  • Sanchez re-tells a story he heard from André about a beast with eleven ears, while Günther says he interviewed Gottlieb about his confrontation with Sidney Morrigan in the Battle of Rhein Valley, confirming that Gottlieb considers Sidney the worst enemy he’s ever faced.
  • The substitute teacher arrives. Her name is Lorelei Wolf, and she normally teaches Wilderness Lore. She bursts in dressed in an Incaland ceremonial outfit that reveals her legs, causing Lloyd to be shocked and appalled. She instructs the class to read up on Incaland, as the first lesson she holds will be on the traditional Incaland anti-storm dance.
  • Anderson sends Cecil one last psychic message before he leaves – Viktor has been snooping around the Mindbending classroom, trying to get his hands on a touchstone. He asks Cecil to look into this, as he has to leave in a hurry.
  • The class heads out for lunch. Lloyd goes to the Assassin’s Club to – in his own words – “strike back”, while Cecil heads down to the cafeteria only to find it’s closed today, in light of the many injuries to the staff.
  • Alice takes Cecil along for lunch in a fancy Frankish restaurant. By coincidence, Günther is there as well, on a date with Evghenia (since the Engineering Club is in style right now). Alice tells Cecil about how her parents want to pull her out of the school, because of the danger, but she’s protested their decision. She wants to stay in Eisenkrone and help build diplomatic relations between Britannia and Teutonia.
  • Lloyd goes to lunch with Anita. He tells her he wants to arrange a wake for the Kaiser, something she thinks is a good idea. She also petitions Lloyd to come play the violin for the assassin’s club more, since his violin-playing is a little less accident-prone than the typical assassin violinist.
  • Suddenly, a scratching sound comes from the window. It’s Rei, wearing a patient gown, hanging on to the outside of one of the tallest towers in school. Aghast, Anita lets her in.
  • Rei has suffered amnesia from her head injury, and only remembers Lloyd. She escaped the infirmary and went looking for him. She doesn’t even remember her own name.
  • Lloyd takes Rei back to the infirmary, excusing himself from the meal with Anita after confirming that the wake will be held, tonight.
  • Meanwhile, Cecil observes Wilhelmina come into the restaurant where he’s seated. She’s carrying an enormous pink dress – a gift meant for Nina – when she suddenly stumbles and falls, straight towards a big cake! Cecil shoots through the air, barely saving both Wilhelmina and the dress, while Evghenia loads up her super boots to help.
  • Evghenia launches herself through the air, flipping hers and Günther’s table right into Günther’s face. Cecil uses the deflection technique Hildegard taught him earlier today, using his body to redirect Evghenia without getting knocked over. Evghenia lands in the cake, but the pink dress is safe.
  • Cecil helps Wilhelmina and the dress get away from the pastries safely, while Evghenia climbs out of the cake and returns to the hapless Günther who is wearing the main course.
  • Suddenly Professor Ryder storms in, searching for Rei. She was last seen stumbling through the Gardening Club. Cecil checks in with Lloyd and discovers where she is – he and Ryder head quickly for the infirmary.
  • Ryder takes care of Rei, leading her into the infirmary. Cecil and Lloyd conclude that this is very bad, and that they hope she will be safe.
  • Cecil and Lloyd head for their respective classes – Martial Arts and Etiquette.
  • Lloyd has a class on dressing up for special occasions. Mathilda von Zweibrücken cleverly convinces him to dress up for a hot date, aiming to try her creepy seduction on him again, but she gets interrupted by the ever-passionate Sanchez.
  • While Mathilda is distracted, Lloyd talks to both Akane and Alice. Akane says that she understands he was the Blue Oni all along, and that he really was a good friend and was there for her when she was attacked. With this in mind, Akane declares her intentions to move into the Military History Club, with all her things. Unfortunately, Alice intends to do the exact same thing, to be more safe from the Dueling Club.
  • Lloyd invites both girls to come live in the Military History Club. Where to fit all their enormous amounts of possessions will be a later issue.
  • Cecil, Jacob, Viktor, Tomoe and Nina show up for Martial Arts class (Sanchez isn’t there, since it was double-booked with Etiquette). Cecil speaks with Tomoe and she says the situation is regrettable, but that lines are being drawn in the sand and that she was forced to attack Minami after she was declared the enemy.
  • Cecil has a conversation with Viktor about the touchstone in the mindbending classroom. Reading Viktor’s mind, he realizes that Viktor is being given mental commands from somewhere. Viktor lies, saying he was looking for the bathroom.
  • Ivan enters the room. He shouts at the class to strip down to their underwear, so that he can inspect their muscles. Nina strongly objects at this inappropriate behavior.
  • Cecil, trying to distract Ivan and protect his classmates from this humiliating treatment, says that his agility means he doesn’t need to build bulk. Ivan is upset at this clearly inferior philosophy and smashes through the ceiling to prove how great he is at jumping, thanks to his super strong legs.
  • Cecil keeps mouthing off to Ivan, claiming he could dodge Ivan’s attacks. Ivan asks him to prove it. Cecil leaps about the room, but Ivan catches him and slams him into the floor with such force that Cecil’s nearly knocked out.
  • The class, horrified at what happened to Cecil, obeys Ivan’s commands to strip down. He inspects them and divides them up into two groups – strong people and weaklings. The strong people may get dressed and proceed with training; the weaklings (Cecil and Jacob) must do pushups in their underwear until he tells them to stop.
  • Cecil is kicked out of the classroom when he starts to get tired. Ivan tells him to come back when he’s stronger. Cecil gets dressed in the corridor.
  • Jacob sneaks out as well, explaining to Cecil that it’s very dangerous to make Ivan mad. Jacob has visible bruises from where Ivan beat him up earlier today – Ivan has a mean temper and hates mindbenders, ever since his fateful encounter with the metal skeleton beast. Jacob doesn’t know what to do to protect the class from him. Cecil suggests going to the Principal.
  • Professor Schröder shows up. He asks Cecil and Jacob what they think of Ivan, and hearing Cecil’s honest opinion, decides not to bring Ivan along for his project.
  • It is revealed that Schröder’s project is a field trip to fight a Storm. It’s tradition for second-year students to participate in a real Storm battle, under the careful supervision of teachers and older students. Ivan gets furious when he hears he isn’t allowed to join.
  • Cecil goes alongside Schröder to see Principal von Krakow and complain about Ivan’s bullying and inappropriate behavior.
