Season 3 episode 23 notes

  • Cecil and Lloyd have a conversation in the school square. Cecil calculates from the receipt he got from Lloyd that either Keanu or Viktor must be the recipient of the letter.
  • Lloyd is happy that Cecil is making progress. Suddenly, they are both ambushed by Snowy, who seems to have torn away from Ryu and has been running around the school. Lloyd pets the giant winter wolf, treating him like a playful puppy. He resolves to return him to Ryu.
  • Cecil, meanwhile, heads off to escort Minami out of the infirmary. He enters through her window, finding that she’s been waiting for him. While Minami packs her few possessions, Cecil goes to speak with Professor Ryder.
  • Günther is complaining to Ryder about some kind of big white bear loose on the school grounds. Ryder says it’s probably just a dog, he should relax.
  • Ryder has a caged, hooded bird with chains around its legs in the infirmary. It’s a Strix, an omen of war, a terrifying Storm Beast that feeds off conflict and anger. Ryder is trying his best not to get angry with it – he keeps it up in the infirmary to keep it away from potentially angry/hormonal teenagers.
  • Mashiro enters the infirmary to help Professor Ryder sort out the supplies. She says hi to Cecil before passing by into the background, near enough to hear the conversation.
  • Cecil tells Ryder about Minami moving back to the club. Ryder says he has no objections – she’s fit as a fiddle. He thanks Cecil for being so thoughtful and spending so much time with her, visiting her several times per day.
  • Suddenly the bird begins to screech and squawk, agitated. Ryder gets busy trying to calm it down, and Cecil and Minami leave together.
  • On the way back, they run into Mikhail, who reveals that he has a date with Rei tonight. He comments on Cecil’s new girlfriend, she’s nice.
  • Minami wonders what “girlfriend” means, so Cecil explains it’s a word for an intimate female friend. Minami (mis)understands.

  • Lloyd returns Snowy to Ryu. Ryu ponders how to get a new leash, since Snowy is so strong now.
  • Lloyd speaks with Ryoko and Akane some about his upcoming elections. Akane is mostly quiet, while Ryoko complains about having to watch Mashiro all the time. There are other assassins covering day shifts, but Rei and Ryoko volunteered to late shifts to keep outsiders out of the Military History Club.
  • Akane leaves after a short conversation, but leaves a note from the Red Oni, telling Lloyd to meet up at the clocktower at midnight.
  • Lloyd and Sophie begin to cook dinner for their friends. Ryoko is tempted by the food, and stays a little longer, even though she’s supposed to take over from Rei soon – Rei has her date, after all.
  • Cecil and Minami enter just in time for a meal of Scandian meatballs. They sit down to eat together with Lloyd, Ryoko, Ryu, Sophie, and Wilhelmina. It turns out Sophie learned a little Nipponese at Tempestafiore Academy.
  • Minami is introduced to everyone (including Snowy, who happily knocks her over) but suddenly freezes up in terror as she sees Naimitsu. Feeling unsteady, she asks Cecil to help her to her room.
  • Cecil takes Minami to the privacy of her room and tells her how the club works, since she doesn’t remember anything. When he points to the showers, she admits to not remembering what a shower is or how it works, but she’s sure Cecil can help her with it in the morning.
  • Cecil, flustered, says goodnight to Minami and leaves. He bumps into Viktor, who shows him his new Manual of Swordiness that he got in the mail, written by a Nipponese master. Cecil takes the opportunity to read his mind, but discovers only that Viktor seems to have trouble remembering something.
  • Just as Cecil returns, the door slams open. It’s Mashiro, with torn disheveled clothes and signs of having been in a fight. She explains that the Strix somehow tore itself free and attacked her. Ryder stuffed it back in its cage, but she’s in a terrible mood and is still really angry with it.
  • Kicking the ground, Mashiro heads for her room, but Cecil intercepts her. He asks her if she’s alright. Mashiro says that seeing Cecil’s behavior lately has made her very angry. The way he treats her, the way he sees her all the time…
  • “Who?” Cecil wonders. Mashiro leaves, slamming the door behind her.
  • Distraught, Cecil heads back to the dining room.
  • Cecil has a short conversation with Sophie, where she admits she has trouble letting go of her old role as secret police maid. It’s hard for her not to keep her eyes and ears peeled – she’s very observant. As Cecil returns, she makes some on-point remarks about his mood and personality, based on what she’s seen.
  • Suddenly there’s a very polite knock on the door. Keanu enters. He’s pale and distraught.
  • Keanu explains to Naimitsu, Lloyd, and Cecil that there’s been a terrible pirate attack on Nipponese shores. He found out in the express letter from his family – they had found the Storm Postman messenger, floating dead in the water. The messages meant for Naimitsu, Mashiro, and the other wealthy Nipponese residents at Eisenkrone were intercepted. Keanu’s family could contact him only because they live so remotely, the pirates didn’t bother them.
  • Cecil, suspicious at how they could send express mail if they live so remotely, reads Keanu’s mind. He discovers that Keanu seems to be hiding something.
  • Keanu leaves, and Cecil takes Naimitsu aside to talk to her. Meanwhile, Lloyd heads towards Mashiro’s room.
  • Lloyd explains what has happened to Mashiro. Mashiro says that her family will be safe – but the Yonagunis might not be, because Clan Kyoka has rerouted all its troops to protect the city and the castle. They did this on Shigeru’s initiative. Since the Yonagunis live on the countryside, Naimitsu’s husband and family might be in great danger.
  • Lloyd heads out into the forest of the night, to fashion himself a new mask out of sand for his meeting with the Red Oni, later tonight…

  • Cecil, meanwhile, takes aside Naimitsu and informs her that the Kushieda spy is definitely either one of Keanu or Viktor. Naimitsu, hardened by the news about her family, says that they must act decisively. It’s decided that Cecil will break into Viktor’s mind at night… while Naimitsu will kidnap and interrogate Keanu, like she did to Minami.
  • Cecil goes to find André, to get his help in looking for a hiding place near Viktor’s room. André is in Auroras bathtub, eating her bath salts. They’re not very good, he telepathically informs Cecil.
  • Before Cecil can get to him, however, he meets Parsifal in the Dueling Club. Parsifal on a whim decides to give Cecil an express letter to Ritterburg, so off he goes.
  • Cecil, on his way to deliver the letter, notices Violet inside a gentlemen’s club. Concerned for his female friends’ presence there, he telepathically makes contact with her. Violet is looking for an infamous assassin named Heidi, supposedly working as a dancer.
  • Cecil delivers the letter to a mysterious man with pointy shoes and a nasal voice, just outside the club. He immediately sends a reply to Parsifal – “top priority!”
  • Cecil hurries inside the shady bar with the half-naked dancing ladies to meet with Violet. He has a plan to help her locate this Heidi – he writes a letter and approaches someone he thinks looks like the manager. Unfortunately, it’s Captain Holstein, Hildegard’s overly zealous second-in-command, here undercover.
  • Holstein tries to arrest Cecil, blows his cover, and an altercation breaks out! A thug snags Cecil and tries to use him as a hostage, but Holstein takes it for a bluff – suspecting Cecil of working with the criminals here. He orders his men to attack.
  • Cecil gets sucker-punched in the gut by one of the criminals, but manages to escape into the rafters, following one of the dancers who disappeared that way. Heidi turns out to be a busty, blond and absolutely ruthless woman, armed with a crossbow she hid in the rafters.
  • Cecil calls on Violet, and she sneaks into the rafters, persuading Heidi that Anita needs her help. Heidi agrees, and heads out.
  • As Cecil leaves, he spots Hildegard watching the operation. She informs him that they’re looking for Heidi, who is a wanted criminal. They knew she was hiding here. Cecil tells her that Heidi and Violet left through the back door… and sends a mental warning to Violet to run. Then he heads back to Eisenkrone, with the mysterious top priority letter.
