Season 3 episode 14 notes

~ Continued from cliffhanger last session ~

  • Ivan storms into the main dining room with his executioner’s axe raised.
  • Professor Gottlieb draws his sword and intercepts Ivan, holding him at bay by fighting defensively. Cecil, meanwhile, shouts at his classmates to run. Everyone flees towards the chapel – everyone except Jacob.
  • Cecil asks Gottlieb if he should enter Ivan’s mind, but Gottlieb doesn’t respond, being too focused on fighting a man with such tremendous strength. He can’t disarm him or disable him, and he doesn’t want to seriously harm a fellow Storm Knight so soon before the Storm.
  • Cecil decides to take matters into his own hands. He plunges into Ivan’s mindscape. It’s for the moment a replica of the Rus wastelands, but there seems to be a storm tearing through it. Ivan is trapped in the nightmare of the Storm that hit his homeland as a child. Melody hovers above the scene, laughing.
  • Cecil confronts Melody, trying to talk sense into her. Melody says she’s having too much fun. She asks Cecil if he’s ever seen true horrors, and when he says yes, she asks him to show them to her.
  • Melody unleashes the most horrible thing Ivan has ever seen – the twisted metal skeleton that killed his family. It’s one of Ivan’s suppressed memories, that she’s tore out in the open as she entered his mind.
  • The hideous beast screams, and Cecil realizes this is Ivan’s self-hatred – his hate and fear of his mental abilities – given the form of a monster from his past. As it attacks, Ivan’s powers go haywire. Fortunately, Ivan’s mental powers are underdeveloped, and Cecil is only mildly harmed by them.
  • Melody tries to show Cecil her own traumas – the memories of all the torture that’s taken place in the castle, psychically transferred to her ten years ago. Cecil narrowly resists.
  • In the physical world, Cecil moves to protect Jacob. Jacob makes mental contact with him, and realizing how dangerous it would be if Jacob’s old Storm Madness wounds were opened up, Cecil takes a drastic action.
  • Cecil tries to use brute force to drive Melody out of Ivan’s mind. The plan backfires spectacularly (Author’s note: Cecil botched), and Melody gains access to Cecil’s telepathy for a brief moment. Horrified, Cecil tries to shield his friends by leaving himself wide open to Melody’s attacks, so that she won’t use him as a relay.
  • The defenseless Cecil is drawn into Melody’s mind, trapped inside the Storm-ravaged hell that is her mindscape. He begins to suffer from Storm Madness, as his naked unprotected mind is exposed to the insane memories of the Castle.
  • Melody’s mind is dominated by the maximum security cell where she was locked up as a little girl. She can feel the Storm coming closer, and once it does, she will lose herself completely – Melody will be gone, and only a Storm-fuelled madwoman will remain.
  • The inner Melody – all that remains of the actual person – is a scared little girl. Cecil tries to persuade her that she is doomed and that she has to kill herself before the Storm takes over.
  • Melody repeats that she doesn’t want to die. Cecil is adamant that it’s the only escape. Eventually, Melody can’t take it anymore – fear turns into anger, anger turns into hate, and hate turns into suffering. Melody unleashes a psychic wave of tremendous proportion, hitting everyone in the castle.
  • Cecil, in desperation, shields Alice and Jacob by drawing their minds into his via the psitanium badges. As a result, Cecil suffers a direct hit by Melody’s wave of pain.
  • Cecil’s mind is overloaded by the impact. He relives the memories of dozens of prisoners trapped in the maximum security cell, all within a couple of seconds.
  • Shunted out of Melody’s mind, Cecil returns to his own body – but all he can do is scream in pain, both with his lungs and with his mind.
  • Gottlieb resists the wave of suffering. Realizing that his best mindbender has been incapacitated, he stabs Ivan in the gut to take him down. The shock and pain finally wrenches Ivan free of Melody’s manipulations, but his own trauma is still let loose inside his head. It seems Melody’s wave has unleashed everyone’s inner fears.
  • Ivan babbles about the metal skeleton. Gottlieb reminds him that all those years ago, he – Conrad Gottlieb – destroyed that thing with his most trusted warhammer.
  • Jacob speaks up. He’s surprised to hear Ivan has been scared of his mindbending powers all this time. Ivan says Jacob would never understand… so Jacob unleashes his powers and plunges into Ivan’s mind, confronting the monster from his past.
  • A stunned Ivan finally drops the axe.
  • Gottlieb hurries to Cecil’s side. Cecil manages to compose himself long enough to tell Gottlieb that he has to kill Melody – now. If not, she’ll drive everyone in the castle insane.
  • Gottlieb hurries up the stairs. A bunch of Cecil’s classmates storm into the room, led by Sanchez, already driven temporarily insane by the psychic wave. They are chasing after Alice.
  • Sanchez tackles Alice to the ground, and pulls her into a strange, frenzied dance.
  • Cecil gets to his feet, and with his last ounce of willpower, hits Sanchez with the back of his lance, stunning him and restoring his sanity – for the moment. Melody might strike again at any moment, but Cecil’s strength is spent – he slips into catatonia…

~

  • Down in the village, Lloyd and Akane, who are wearing their psitanium badges, feel Cecil’s pain. His psychic scream managed to tear through the barriers of the Castle – but nothing else makes it through, and they cannot contact him.
  • Lloyd drops everything he’s doing and hurries outside to speak with Schröder. Schröder is worried, the castle is supposed to be a safe place. WIth the weather worsening, though, and darkness approaching, it’d be a bad idea to go there now. It’s already begun snowing quite heavily.
  • Akane suggests sending Naimitsu to investigate. Lloyd mentions it might be a bad idea to have dangerous things at their back. Schröder concedes, and gives permission to Lloyd to go with Naimitsu to check up on his friends.
  • Lloyd quickly speaks with Gloria and Bartolomeus to make sure they know what’s happened, and then heads out to meet Naimitsu, just outside the village gates.
  • Lloyd lends Naimitsu his cloak, and uses his firebending powers to try and keep her warm. The weather is rapidly getting colder and darker. The two begin heading up the mountain, towards the Castle.
  • Lloyd is stopped by Captain Stauff, keeping guard outside the castle. The soldiers are very afraid of the Count, and have heard fighting and screaming from inside – they don’t dare enter. They’re normally stationed in separate barracks at a distance, because the Count doesn’t like being disturbed.
  • Lloyd pushes his way past them, ignoring their warnings. He enters the main hall and sees the devastating scene of Gottlieb and Ivan’s fight. Shouting out if anyone’s there, he hears Gottlieb from upstairs.
  • Gottlieb comes stumbling down the stairs, badly injured. Count Adlergriff got between him and Melody. It was a long, drawn-out fight but the Count is unconscious, and Melody is dead. Grief lines Gottlieb’s face.
  • Lloyd escorts Gottlieb to the chapel, where Cecil, Alice, Sanchez, Jacob, Ivan, and the rest of their class are hiding. Cecil is catatonic, staring into space and talking to himself. He’s convinced the Storm will claim them all, his will broken by the horrors Melody showed him.
  • Jacob explains to Lloyd what happened. Lloyd looks at the broken husk of Cecil, and asks him to read his mind.
  • Cecil protests. He must never use his mindbending powers again, not after this horror…
  • Jacob turns to Cecil and accuses him of being exactly like Ivan – running from the trauma. Cecil snaps out of his catatonia enough to talk.
  • Cecil turns to Lloyd and says that Melody is dead, and that everything is his fault. It would be better if he had died.
  • Lloyd punches Cecil in the face. For once, he is angry. With the authority of a Pendragon Wilder, he orders Cecil to read his mind.
  • Reluctant, Cecil enters Lloyd’s mindscape. It’s a homely, cosy cottage with a nice garden, a welcome mat, and a yellow road leading up to an open door. There are no defenses here, and no secrets. A perplexed, dazed Cecil steps inside Lloyd’s mind.
  • Everywhere there’s pictures – of all of Lloyd’s friends, and the way he sees them. Everyone Lloyd has ever spoken to is in there, everyone a treasured friend. Lloyd directs Cecil to the pictures of him.
  • Cecil sees himself… the way Lloyd sees him, as a well-meaning, heroic, intelligent and above all, good person. The spark of hope is reignited in Cecil’s soul.
  • Lloyd counsels Cecil, and Cecil believes him. He regains some of his strength, and he will always remember the way Lloyd sees him.
  • Gottlieb says they must gather up everyone at the castle, and leave. This is an evil place. As the Count yet lives, they should take him to face a trial at the village, so that he can answer for his crimes.
  • Naimitsu brings Lloyd and Cecil to fetch the unconscious Count, while Gottlieb goes to look for Reginald and Clara, who are missing.
  • As the three make their way up the stairs, they find that the Count is missing, and a trail of blood leads away…
